The Piano Lesson 1

My first impressions from the title and cover were good because of its musical aspect.  However, I was wrong.  The characters seem uneducated, education being something I associate with music.  They also seem to be from an earlier time period because they use language considered inappropriate for society today.

My comment on Alec's blog:
I also thought this book would be more civilized than what it really is.  Perhaps there will be better educated characters in the future.

  1. I agree, many of the characters seem lower class and under-educated. I'm not quite sure when this book takes place, but I think we can glean some information about the time period from the language.

  2. I'm going to have to disagree with this one. There are plenty of musicians out there that aren't "educated." Just because someone talks differently, doesn't mean they don't have intelligence and this is pretty irrelevant to music in my opinion.

  3. I do agree on one of your ideas. The discriminatory language they introduced is considered rude and thought of as a racist remark today. Back then, these African Americans ancestry seemed to be involved as to why they were oppressed.

  4. I agree on the education part. Usually people that are associated with music have some sort of intelligence but so far the characters seem like they haven't ever been in school.

  5. Yeah, it does seem like an earlier time period because of the language they use and I also thought that it would start out just being about music and such but i was wrong..... horribly wrong.
