One thing I have noticed on reading Othello is the names all end in "O" or "A". I think this might be to make it sound more Italian or foreign. It could also be to differentiate men from women. Another thing is is the strange punctuation one finds in the text. I could be to tell the actor how to say a word like in English "you all" can become "y'all". The last thing I found was how people talk to themselves a lot in this play. I believe it's called a
monologue but I'm not sure.
I especially agree with how each character's name ends with an O for a male, or A for a woman, it was definitely intentional. I think it is another way to create separation between the two genders. As we get closer to the end of the story, it becomes more apparent that there is conflict between man and woman.
ReplyDeleteI aslo wrote about the name endings but I thought that they were more for the separation/connections of characters. I didn't think about the foreign side.
